They are some of the scariest words any patient can hear; that they have cancer and will have to start aggressive treatment for the disease immediately. Even with rapid advances in medicine and revolutionary new treatments, though, an ounce of prevention retains its equation to a pound of cure.

So, it was with much interest that the medical and investment communities watched the transfer of the company known as Senior Scientific LLC and its star researcher, Dr. Edward Flynn, to Los Alamos, New Mexico-based Manhattan Scientifics Inc. (OTCBB:MHTX). There was no dollar figure made public with the deal. Flynn’s work in nuclear physics focuses on the emerging field of nanomedicine, aimed at early detection and localization of cancer and other diseases, and providing image-guided therapy for treatment.

To reiterate an earlier point, early detection of cancer can be critical to effective treatment. For example, current mammography cannot detect a breast cancer tumor until it has grown to over 10 million cells. Dr. Flynn’s technology has proven the ability to detect breast cancer tumors while they are only 1% that large, resulting in a 100-fold increase in sensitivity and, with it, the probability of early detection.

Also, as ovarian cancers have as yet escaped effective screening, it’s equally cheerful that Flynn’s new technology has demonstrated similar performance in detecting ovarian cancer, a cancer with no effective screening techniques. It has also demonstrated effectiveness in monitoring chemotherapy for leukemia, allowing more effective treatment with fewer side effects.

MHTX has made its name acquiring the exclusive rights to the key patents and intellectual property and will soon be positioned to enter into manufacturing and licensing agreements, the likes of Dr. Flynn’s. It’s a strategy that, so far, at least, has yielded fairly decent figures on the company’s bottom line, which showed black ink in the third quarter of fiscal 2009 – the first such quarterly profit in the firm’s history. MHTX also has branch offices in New York and Montreal, besides Los Alamos (hometown of the “Manhattan Project” – code name for construction of the Atomic Bomb – hence, the name of the company).

Before word gets out about this company, investors had better consider this: its stock price remains in the middle of a trading range which hit its highest heights last September at 19.5 cents, after digging itself out of the rubble of a 2.9-cent reading last May. On the date of the Flynn-Senior Scientific purchase, the price was around a dime. Now, with the success Flynn’s technology appears to have made nipping some cancers in the bud, small cap watchers would do themselves a favor not watching too long.
